The detailed specifications are those of a jacket worn in Japan after the war, but I packed it with details I like and imagined the relaxed atmosphere of something old, and made this piece using old Japanese cotton fabric.

It has short raglan sleeves and an overall loose silhouette, including around the arms and body width.

The fabric is an old indigo-dyed cotton cloth from around the Taisho period.

It was originally used as the lining of a futon, which was in the form of a kimono known as nightwear. The body and sleeves were made of indigo fabric with different shades, some where the color had completely faded, and some where the color still remained. I think the remaining indigo cotton fabric was sewn together to make a single kimono (nightwear). It appears to have been used quite a bit after it was made, as there are marks all over it, giving it quite an atmosphere.

From that state, I unraveled it once, returned it to its cloth state, and finished it into clothing. I imagined the placement in my head so that I could make the most of the nicely grown-up marks and give them meaning, and then sewed it up. I increased the number of hand-sewn areas, and you can feel the softness of the cotton fabric, which has changed nicely.

The lining of the entire garment is also made of vintage fabric. The lining of the body is made of vintage white cotton fabric, and the lining of the sleeves is made of vintage indigo linen fabric. I used indigo linen because I wanted to play around with the color contrast with the white lining and make the sleeves easier to move in.

The buttons are old Japanese wood buttons dyed with ink , and the power buttons are shell buttons, each one hand-wrapped. The buttonholes and bar closures are hand-sewn to match the feel of the old fabric. You can feel a warmth that cannot be achieved by machine.

Cotton thread is used to match the vintage atmosphere.

Compared to today's affluent times, the look of fabrics born in harsh times when poverty was all they had and the norms of the world were completely different gives them a unique atmosphere that could not be created even if one wanted to, and I think Japanese fabrics are wonderful, elaborate fabrics that can be proudly shown off to the world. Please try feeling the fabric that has been reborn as a jacket.

Why not try incorporating some good old things that are no longer available in modern times into your daily life?

*This piece was sewn with an old treadle sewing machine. You may not notice it at first glance, but I hope you enjoy the loose stitches that can only be achieved with manual, not electric, sewing.

*The fabric is over 100 years old. In order to enjoy it for a long time to come, please wash it by soaking it in water and spin-dry it gently in a laundry net.
