This piece is based on the design of a Japanese shirt from the early 1900s and was made using old Japanese linen fabric.

The shirt that I used as the base for the design is from Choya Shirt, a long-established shirt brand founded in 1887, and is a shirt from the early 1900s. The design of the front, the cut of the hem, and the gathers in the back are all really nice.

The fabric used is a striped cotton/silk kimono that was woven and worn from the Taisho to early Showa periods.

The indigo-dyed warp threads are cotton, the white threads are silk, and the weft threads are cotton and silk. The weft threads are made up of two cotton threads lined up next to each other, and two silk threads that are even thinner than the cotton threads. At first, I thought that only the white warp threads were silk, but the texture of the fabric felt a little more like silk, so I dug deeper and found that there was silk thread hidden in the weft threads. It's in these places that I feel the fascinating and wonderfulness of old Japanese fabrics.

The silk has a light, smooth texture, and a slight sheen that doesn't look gaudy, and the cotton in it makes it a little firmer. It's a nice fabric with a strong presence. Personally, I like the color of the edge of the fabric cut at the center of the back.

When making shirts, the sleeves are attached by hand and the buttonholes are also hand sewn. There may be some differences in comfort and the buttons, but more than that, we want you to see it as a specification that suits old fabrics and enjoy the warmth of handwork that cannot be produced by machines.

The buttons are old Japanese wooden buttons dyed in ink, and are attached using a method called "rooster's foot attachment." This method of attachment is meaningful because it makes the button easier to attach as one side is raised by shifting the center of gravity, and although it is small, we hope you will enjoy it as one of the small details that we paid particular attention to.

Cotton thread is used to match the vintage atmosphere.

Compared to today's affluent times, the look of fabrics born in harsh times when poverty was all they had and the norms of the world were completely different gives them a unique atmosphere that could not be created even if one wanted to, and I think Japanese fabrics are wonderful, elaborate fabrics that can be proudly shown off to the world. Please try and feel the fabric that has been reborn as a shirt.

Why not try incorporating some good old things that are no longer available in modern times into your daily life?

*This piece was sewn with an old treadle sewing machine. You may not notice it at first glance, but I hope you enjoy the loose stitches that can only be achieved with manual, not electric, sewing.

*The fabric is over 100 years old. In order to enjoy it for a long time to come, please wash it by soaking it in water and spin-dry it gently in a laundry net.
