This bag was made using vintage black-dyed Japanese cloth and was inspired by the design of bags used by postal workers.
Compared to hand-woven fabric, it has a tighter weave, and over time it changes to a soft cotton texture. Many fabrics from before the Taisho period are hand-woven, but this fabric is machine-woven. However, even if it is machine-woven and from the early Showa period, it is from 80 to 90 years ago, so it is completely different from modern fabrics and is a good fabric that exudes a unique atmosphere that is not found in modern times.
When I say black, I don't mean jet black, but rather inky black. It has already developed into a nice black color, but you can still enjoy watching it change over time once it is made into a bag.
In order to preserve the texture of the outer fabric, the lining is made of vintage cotton fabric that has a nice character of the same age, and all other small parts are also made of vintage fabric.
The buttons on the flap and the small pocket that is attached when the flap is opened are made from old Japanese ink-dyed wood buttons, and the inner pockets feature old shell buttons.
The buttonholes and bar closures are hand sewn to match the feel of the old fabric. You can feel the warmth that can't be achieved by machine.
The shoulder strap is designed to be tied by passing it through a hole. You can adjust the length to your liking by changing the position of the knot.
Compared to today's affluent times, the look of fabrics born in harsh times when poverty was all they had and the norms of the world were completely different gives them a unique atmosphere that could not be created even if one wanted to, and I think Japanese fabrics are wonderful, elaborate fabrics that can be proudly shown off around the world. Please try and feel the fabrics that have been reborn as bags.
Why not try incorporating some good old things that are no longer available in modern times into your daily life?
*This piece was sewn using an old treadle sewing machine. You may not notice it at first glance, but I hope you enjoy the loose stitches that can only be achieved by hand, not by electric.
*This fabric is nearly 100 years old. In order to enjoy it for many years to come, we recommend that you wash it by soaking it in water and spin-dry it gently in a laundry net.
