This bag was made using old Japanese indigo-dyed cloth, with the design inspired by bags used by postal workers.
The fabric used is an old striped hemp and cotton cloth woven around the Meiji to Taisho period.
The handwoven fabric, loosely woven from thick linen and cotton threads, was found in the form of an unused bolt.
The warp threads are made of off-white and white linen threads (off-white is hemp, white is hemp or ramie), and the weft threads are made of cotton threads dyed so darkly indigo that they appear black at first glance.
It has a unique, rugged look that gives it a rough feel, creating an atmosphere not found in modern fabrics. It is a magnificent fabric with a heavy feel and a strong presence.
Since it was an unused bolt of fabric, it still has a firm texture, and you can enjoy watching the texture change as you use it.
In order to make the most of the texture of the outer fabric, the lining is made from old indigo-dyed linen cloth, and all other small parts are also made from old linen cloth.
The buttons on the flap and the small pocket that opens when the flap is opened are made from old Japanese wood buttons dyed with ink, and the inner pockets use old shell buttons.
The buttonholes and bar studs are hand-sewn to match the feel of the old fabric, giving it a warmth that cannot be achieved by machine.
The shoulder strap is designed to be fastened by passing it through a hole and tying it. You can adjust the length to your liking by changing the position of the knot.
Compared to today's affluent times, the texture of fabrics born in harsh times when people were poor and had nothing but what was normal in the world is completely different. You can feel the unique atmosphere of that era, which you couldn't create even if you wanted to, and I think Japanese fabrics are wonderful, elaborate fabrics that can be proudly shown to the world. Please try and feel the fabric that has been reborn as a bag.
Why not try incorporating some good old things that are no longer available in modern times into your daily life?
*This piece was sewn using an old treadle sewing machine. You may not notice it at first glance, but I hope you enjoy the loose stitches that can only be achieved by hand, not by electric.
*The fabric is nearly 100 years old. To ensure you can enjoy it for many years to come, we recommend washing it in a soaking wash and gently spin-drying it in a laundry net.
