This hat is made using old Japanese wool fabric.

The fabric used is wool gabardine, which was originally worn as a tobi coat at the time. As it was originally a fabric used for coats, it is thick and has a heavy feel.

It was discovered in the home of a former wealthy merchant, and was a custom-made item made in an era when ready-made garments were not available. It is understandable why this fabric is not often seen used for tobi coats.

At first glance, it may look like a fabric that is still being woven in modern times, but the atmosphere that exudes from it is unique to something so ancient, giving it a special presence.

The fabric used for the lining is a vintage cotton/silk cloth from around the early Showa period. Other parts such as the suberi (inner tape) and piping tape are also made from vintage Japanese fabric. Although these are parts that cannot be seen, matching the tastes creates a sense of unity.

Compared to today's affluent times, the texture of fabrics born in harsh times when people were poor and had nothing but what was common in the world is completely different. You can feel the unique atmosphere of that era, which you couldn't create even if you wanted to, and I think Japanese fabrics are wonderful, elaborate fabrics that can be proudly shown to the world. Please try and feel the fabric that has been reborn as a hat.

 *The fabric is nearly 100 years old. To ensure you can enjoy it for many years to come, we recommend washing it in a soaking wash and gently spin-drying it in a laundry net.
