This piece was made using old Japanese linen cloth, inspired by the image of a work jacket that was made in an era before mass production processes were invented, regardless of country.
The fabric is a cotton/silk kimono that was worn around the Meiji to Taisho era.
The warp threads are indigo dyed, the white threads are cotton, and the indigo dyed weft threads are silk.
From a distance it looks like a plain grey fabric, but it is in fact a fine striped pattern made up of two indigo-dyed threads and two white threads woven side by side. The silk thread used for the weft has thin and thick parts, giving the fabric an uneven texture that is not too neat and even, creating a rich and pleasant atmosphere.
The silk makes the texture and weight of the fabric lighter. In order to make the most of the texture of the outer fabric, the lining is made of old silk fabric, and silk is also used in other small parts. In addition, more parts are hand-sewn to give the fabric a soft feel.
The buttons are old Japanese wood buttons dyed with ink , and the power buttons are shell buttons, each one hand-wrapped. The buttonholes and bar closures are hand-sewn to match the feel of the old fabric. You can feel a warmth that cannot be achieved by machine.
Cotton thread is used to match the vintage atmosphere.
Compared to today's affluent times, the look of fabrics born in harsh times when poverty was all they had and the norms of the world were completely different gives them a unique atmosphere that could not be created even if one wanted to, and I think Japanese fabrics are wonderful, elaborate fabrics that can be proudly shown off to the world. Please try feeling the fabric that has been reborn as a jacket.
Why not try incorporating some good old things that are no longer available in modern times into your daily life?
*This piece was sewn with an old treadle sewing machine. You may not notice it at first glance, but I hope you enjoy the loose stitches that can only be achieved with manual, not electric, sewing.
*The fabric is over 100 years old. In order to enjoy it for a long time to come, please wash it by soaking it in water and spin-dry it gently in a laundry net.
I soaked the item twice after it was finished and after it was finished, but the color of the lining is easily removed when it is soaked in water. Please wash it separately to avoid color transfer.
