The overall image of this jacket is rooted in French workwear, while the finer details — such as the collar, sleeves, and pockets — reflect what I personally find beautiful and what I would want to wear today.

Rather than a sharply tailored silhouette, I aimed for a piece with a relaxed and effortless feeling.
It blends the past and the present while still leaving a sense of space and softness in its finish.

The fabric used is antique Japanese hemp cloth woven around the Meiji to Taisho era.
It is a handwoven textile made with thick hemp yarns and was discovered in unused bolt form.

The texture unique to hemp yarn, with its subtle movement and irregularity, along with the way the heavy fabric naturally falls, gives it a strength and presence rarely found in modern textiles.

The deep indigo color has an almost immersive atmosphere, while the slightly rough and rugged expression is also part of this fabric’s unique charm.
It is a remarkable textile with both weight and strong presence.

Because the fabric was found unused in bolt form, it still retains some firmness, and I believe the process of the texture softening and changing through wear is something to be enjoyed over time.

The buttons are antique Japanese wood buttons dyed with sumi ink, while the backing buttons are shell buttons.
Each one has been individually attached by hand with thread-wrapped shanks.

The buttonholes and reinforcements are hand-sewn to match the atmosphere of the old fabric, giving a warmth and irregularity that machines cannot replicate.

To complement the vintage character of the piece, cotton thread was used throughout the construction.

Compared to the richness and convenience of modern times, these fabrics were born in a much harsher era where resources were limited and everyday life was entirely different from today.
Because of this, they possess an atmosphere and depth that simply cannot be artificially recreated.

I believe Japanese antique textiles are truly remarkable materials, worthy of being appreciated around the world for their incredible craftsmanship and human touch.
I hope you can truly feel the character of this fabric now reborn as a jacket.

Why not incorporate something timeless and rooted in the past into everyday life?

Please note:
This piece was sewn using an antique foot-powered sewing machine. While it may not be obvious at first glance, I hope you can appreciate the subtle looseness and character in the stitching that can only come from human-powered sewing rather than electric machines.

The fabric used is over 100 years old. To preserve it for many years to come, I recommend gentle soaking when washing and only light spin-drying inside a laundry net.
