About the Piece
The overall design is rooted in French workwear, while the finer details, such as the collar, sleeves and pockets, reflect what I personally find appealing and what I would want to wear today.
Rather than following the curved silhouette typically associated with jackets, I wanted to create a piece with a more relaxed, understated character.
By bringing elements of the past and present together, the aim was to create a garment that retains a certain sense of openness and simplicity.
About the Fabric
The fabric is antique Japanese hemp (asa), dating from around the Meiji periods (1868–1912).
It is a handwoven textile made with thick yarns in a loose, rustic weave. Originally, it was worn as a kimono.
The natural movement and texture of the hemp yarn, combined with the weight of the fabric, create a beautiful drape. It has a strength and character that are rarely found in contemporary textiles.
The elongated check pattern is another striking feature. Together with the simple, rustic texture of the weave, it gives the fabric a distinctive presence.
The deep indigo colour is also one of its defining qualities. Much of the rich indigo dye applied at the time remains, creating a depth of colour that draws you in. Its somewhat raw and rugged appearance is another quality unique to this fabric.
I consider this an exceptional textile, combining substantial weight with a strong visual presence.
The fabric is in good condition and still retains much of its original firmness. I hope you will enjoy watching its texture and colour gradually change through wear over time.
Details & Construction
The buttons are antique Japanese wooden buttons, individually dyed with sumi ink. Shell buttons are used as backing buttons, and each button is attached by hand using a traditional thread-shank technique.
The buttonholes and bar tacks are also finished by hand, in keeping with the character of the old fabric. These details bring a certain warmth and subtle irregularity that machine work cannot quite replicate.
Cotton thread is used throughout to complement the vintage character of the fabric.
Compared with the abundance of modern life, the time in which these fabrics were made was one of scarcity and hardship, when people often had to make do with what was available. The circumstances and everyday values of that time were very different from our own.
The expressions found in these fabrics are something that cannot simply be recreated, no matter how much one tries. They carry a distinctive atmosphere that could only have come from the era in which they were made.
I believe Japanese textiles are remarkable works of craftsmanship, worthy of being appreciated around the world. I hope you will experience the texture and character of this fabric for yourself, now given a new life as a jacket.
Why not bring something of the beauty of the past, something rarely found in the present day, into your everyday life?
※ This piece was sewn using an antique treadle sewing machine. At first glance, you may not notice the difference, but we hope you will appreciate the subtle looseness and character of the stitching, made possible by the rhythm of human-powered sewing rather than an electric machine.
※ The fabric is over 100 years old. To preserve it and enjoy it for many years to come, we recommend gentle washing. Avoid prolonged soaking, and when spin-drying, place the garment in a laundry net and use only a short, gentle cycle.
