The detailed specifications are those of a jacket worn in Japan after the war, but I packed it with details I like and created this piece using old Japanese linen fabric, imagining the relaxed atmosphere of old items.
It has short raglan sleeves and an overall loose silhouette, including around the arms and body width.
The fabric is a ramie kimono called Ojiya Chijimi from the Taisho to early Showa period.
Ojiya Chijimi is a fabric woven in the Ojiya area of Niigata Prefecture, characterized by wrinkles created by using tightly twisted threads. The fabric used this time has a great look due to the wrinkles that were created when it was worn at the time, and when you look closely you can see a pattern that looks like random dots. I don't know if this pattern was created intentionally by dyeing or by chance, but it has an indescribable nice look. The fabric has the swaying movement that is unique to linen, but also has a firm texture, and although the fabric is woven with thin threads and appears light at first glance, it has a nice look with a heavy atmosphere.
This is a slightly sheer linen cloth that was worn in the summer at that time. It is breathable and dries quickly after washing or when it gets wet with sweat, so it is comfortable to wear. It is a little different from modern linen. Since it is a thin fabric, it is thought of as a spring/summer item, but in autumn/winter, the cloth has enough presence that it does not look out of place even when combined with heavier items such as thin knitwear and wool pants, so if you think about how to combine it, you can enjoy it all year round.
The buttons are old Japanese wood buttons dyed with ink , and the power buttons are shell buttons, each one hand-wrapped. The buttonholes and bar closures are hand-sewn to match the feel of the old fabric. You can feel a warmth that can't be achieved by machine.
Cotton thread is used to match the vintage atmosphere.
Compared to today's affluent times, the look of fabrics born in harsh times when poverty was all they had and the norms of the world were completely different gives them a unique atmosphere that could not be created even if one wanted to, and I think Japanese fabrics are wonderful, elaborate fabrics that can be proudly shown off to the world. Please try and feel the fabric that has been reborn as a shirt jacket.
Why not try incorporating some good old things that are no longer available in modern times into your daily life?
*This piece was sewn with an old treadle sewing machine. You may not notice it at first glance, but I hope you enjoy the loose stitches that can only be achieved with manual, not electric, sewing.
*The fabric is over 100 years old. In order to enjoy it for a long time to come, please wash it by soaking it in water and spin-dry it gently in a laundry net.
